Speaker 1Sunday. Good morning, it's 6.07,. It is a Monday. It's a beautiful, beautiful Monday Boy. It fills with 56 in Fort Payne, 59 here at QSP. Let me ask you, did you have to turn your heat on on the way in this morning?
Speaker 2I thought about it. I'll be honest, I did too. It ran through my head.
Speaker 1It was just a little cool. I'm not used to it coming out to work yet, but it's not going to last much longer because you've got the heat back on today, 86 near 90 tomorrow. Now, later in the week we could get some tropical rain.
Speaker 2Oh tropical.
Speaker 1There is a chance. There is a disturbance moving in through in the Gulf. It's going to move towards Texas and it looks like it's a pretty sure thing of coming ashore in Texas, possibly even as strong as a Category 1 hurricane possibly could be. And the way it's moving, anytime you're on the right side of the hurricane. When it comes to shore, you're on the dirty side and you could get a lot of rain, and that's where we're going to be on this one.
Speaker 2On Thursday.
Speaker 1Thursday this is to guess at the timing. Probably we're already looking at a good chance of rain Thursday. We may get some tropical rain, which means a lot of rain Thursday and it could carry into Friday morning, possibly into even midday Friday.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's like rain, but make it tropical.
Speaker 1A little heavy rain, oh Lord. So as far as football, hopefully their guess is it'll come ashore faster than they're looking at and get on out of here. They make way for Friday night, which could be better weather.

Speaker 1That's Sparkman, so we'll be on the road into near Huntsville. Okay, that area, okay. So, speaking of football, congrats to the Hoax Bluff Eagles. This week's WQSB Dixie Designs High School Football Team of the Week had a big win Friday and they'll be picking up the Team of the Week trophy and t-shirts later on this week.

Speaker 2I make you go on Saturdays and make you Harlow's Pee Wee games, because I literally hate going by myself. I get it, but I've made some friends. Well, you and I have made some friends. I love watching football, yeah, and it's so much fun to watch these. Listen, they take Pee Wee seriously.

Speaker 2It's not like a little old play game out there. They are taking it seriously.
Speaker 1Sometimes a step too far, like the guy who screamed kill him. I think that's a little much. A little much. I know you want to tackle him, but you can leave it at that. Yeah, the dad seems serious. Yeah, and I want to give some shout-outs later, but that's what Harlow said when she was on the field hey, barry Galloway, I thought that was funny. Yeah, no, I think it's funny. I'm not complaining, I think it's funny. No, we love it, it's not just first name, it's like the full name. The full name, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2We love meeting people. Yes, like if we ever go out to lunch or that Recognize us we're just people.
Speaker 1We're just people. Man On the radio I go to Walmart, like everybody else does. I go to the grocery store. Oh yeah, it's normal.
Speaker 2But the worst is when you have to buy something embarrassing. I'm not going to name out specific things, specifical, specifical things Tropical storm Tropical.

Speaker 2Please seek shelter now category one, but you know what I'm saying. If you've got a cantori's there if you've got a buggy full of embarrassing things and toilet paper yeah, and some egg slacks wedge of cheese yeah, I know your stomach's tore up.

Speaker 2And I feel like people look at my buggy and they judge.

We've been talking about this for a few weeks because today is the day that we announce our first teacher of the week and our first health care hero of the week. So if you've nominated somebody, we could be calling your name out around 7 10. I think we're even going to call both of the winners, the teacher and the health care hero. Just tell them, thank you for what you do. Yeah, we are, and they each, by the way, won a hundred dollars. Oh so that's awesome'd be nice.

A 44-year-old woman in Greece was arrested After it was discovered she intentionally started wildfires because she enjoyed watching firefighters and flirting with them.

Speaker 1Now it's something new that they started for this award show. It recognizes an artist's passion for service and for groundbreaking contributions to the country music industry and beyond. And I think just from what I know and we've seen about Kane because we were at CRS back a few months ago- yeah, march, and he was the.
Speaker 1Humanitarian of the Year Award for his works with the Boys and Girls Clubs and all he's done. And he was the humanitarian of the year award for his uh works with the boys and girls clubs and all he's done because he was part of that. They helped him when he was little. Yeah, I think he has a passion and he got so emotional over that yeah you could tell that's something he really feels deeply about yeah, that was real, those were real emotions.

Wow, directv has filed a complaint with the FCC against Disney, accusing the company of not negotiating in good faith with the midst of ongoing blackout of Disney on TV networks so that includes ESPN and ABC, and that's where the football games were.

Speaker 2It blocked ABC and ESPN from DirecTV in the middle of the kickoff of football.
Speaker 1That's awful. And now you've got Dancing with the Stars coming up soon on ABC. So all the new TV shows are coming out in the next few weeks and if you have DirecTV, you're not seeing any of these.

Speaker 2And then this story is so scary. Walmart has expanded the recall brand you know that's walmart's brand apple juice due to high arsenic levels. Oh, this is dangerous. Yes, I know, it's including 133 000 cases from various brands. Other impacted retailers include aldi and walgreens. I know the effective products were sold in multiple states and various bottle sizes. So what do you do? Just avoid apple juice.
Speaker 1I guess especially the Great Value brand right now.
Speaker 2That's scary.
Speaker 1Until, you know, until they get this straightened out.
Speaker 2You can't give your kids arsenic.
Speaker 1No, because my kids, when they were little, they loved apple juice.

So again, chevrolet will be stuck at number two for the third straight week, but still number two. Can you really complain about being number two when the music? Well, you can like football and sports, yes, but like in the music business, I mean I know you want the number one, but still number two.
Speaker 2Two that means you're still selling a lot of records oh yeah, a lot of albums I wouldn't complain about the money, but I'd still want to be number one. You still want. You want to say hey I got number one.

Speaker 2I'm just being real creepy. Now you can look at my desk again. I know, you know what, though, I have learned in my many years of crafting and working and creating and artistry for real that a clean workspace is not the sign of a creative mind I think a chaotic I'm serious really.
Speaker 2I think a chaotic workspace because your, your mind is moving so many different ways. I want this and I need this and I need that and there's things you want to store on there. There's pictures of reed, there's pictures of reagan, there's awards you've won, there's a rolodex dated back from 1972. Yeah, the rolodex is there. I mean like it, it shows you're just a real person. But I did an appreciation post. I said did you know that? What?
Speaker 1I'm looking at what you wrote. That's very sweet.
Speaker 2Well thanks, I appreciate that well it was an appreciation post because I do. I come in at 5 o'clock every morning, sometimes earlier, not to too long.
Speaker 1You do Not to too long. Well, like Mondays, you said you couldn't sleep because you're excited about coming and doing the show.
Speaker 2I know I'm just so excited. But I come in and you a packet of papers, have to go over and read them. Understand my stories, we talk about them. So we spend from 5 to 6 talking about the stories that we're going to do for the day. Somebody told me one time I know you only work 6 to 9. Could you help me move after 9 o'clock? Yeah, that's how you felt. We don't get out of here till lunch after lunch time, yeah yeah, you're right and by the time the show is over, we've been up.
Speaker 2I do get up at 3 30, but it's usually to fix my hair. Don't look at it today I didn't fix it today.

Speaker 2I did, yeah, I got it, yeah yeah, I did well, my dog needed out, and so I lay down on the couch for a minute and then the rest is history. But we've had some amazing comments on this post.

Speaker 2Yes, they're so cute. And while the designs may vary for the American release, some Crocs toys spotted abroad featured the McDonald's logo, the fries and the McNuggets. Release date is to be announced.

Speaker 1This one kind of hits home a little bit because it happened to one of the kids when they were little. They got like a little lego piece, but it was able to get it out okay I think it was reed, because he loved legos and had a little. I think it was one of the little tiny heads you put on the little people, oh no, on his nose.
Speaker 2Why do they do that I? Don't know why do kids go for the nose, why it could be worse. Anyway, tell me the story. There's other possibilities. Oh yeah, I just called that.
Speaker 1But I'm glad they went for the nose. But a stuck in his nose for 25 years. He sneezed in the shower, discovered a small toy came out and it was part of a Lego Guy's 32. He remembers playing with Legos a lot when he was little. He remembers putting one up in his nose and he said come to think of it. It never came out until now. He says I'm not like you asked. He said I'm not entirely sure what possessed me to do this back when I was seven, other than the fact that it was the right size and it was the perfect place to put it. So it went up into where they couldn't get it out. Now it has come out during a hard sneeze.
Speaker 2Can you imagine the relief he felt after that came out of his nose?
Speaker 1Well, I'm sure they gave him an option If we can do surgery, or we can do this, or it may come out on its own, or you can pick it out, possibly if you go deep enough, which some people do.
Speaker 2No, that would just shove it back in Especially at red lights. Hey, you've got a funny story you've got to tell about things being stuck inside of you for years.

Okay, older, so he's gonna. He said hey, why don't you run back and forth in front of me? In front of me, I'm gonna try to see if I can hit you, being an idiot, idiot being the young. I said sure, no problem, I thought I was fast.
Speaker 2You were in target practice. Yeah, I was target practice.
Speaker 1So that's the fourth or fifth time he was missing, until he finally hit me right in the arm.
Speaker 2Oh, with a BB gun, with a BB gun.
Speaker 1So we went to the doctor and he looked at it and said it's in there, yeah. And I said we Maybe it actually didn't go in there, Maybe it just hit the arm and fell out, but there was a hole and everything was fine.
Speaker 4Okay.
Speaker 1But the mother went crazy because she thought what if you'd hit him in the head?
Speaker 2Oh yeah, what if you hit him in the eye?
Speaker 5Oh, yeah, you don't think about that, but then, years went by.
Speaker 1Years later, like my senior year in school, I had this knot come up on my arm. It looked like a little day surgery. I was sitting up in the office. He cut into it and all I heard is old noah's going like he hit like a metal. He said you had a bullet in your arm. He said a bullet. He said well, a bb. Basically, he said did you get shot? And I had a thing for me. I said, as a matter of fact, yes. When I was about five, six years old, I did my brother, yeah so that's so funny.
Speaker 2The funny part is, everybody's so worried like oh no, what is this up on you? What?
Speaker 1if he loses his arm it could be cancerous.
Speaker 2Doctor said it could be some kind of tumor he plays football, he can't lose his throwing arm, whatever all of a sudden dink so that got the bullet, yeah, so it can happen I like that story.

Speaker 1But they were not lying, because sure enough, I hadn't caught one. Put it in there. Come home the next day I noticed, oh, he's being awfully still today. The next day, you haven't moved a bit, have you buddy? The third day he still hadn't moved. Now, look, he only had three legs and he was no longer with us.

Speaker 1He died. Yeah the bearded dragon got him. So I called and they said the cricket killed the bearded dragon no.

There could be some tropical rain coming this way off of the disturbance in the the gulf, which we'll know more about that later this week, but not today though, and, holly, I knew this was going to be something that interests you for sure. This interview this morning because you listen to a lot of podcasts.
Speaker 2Yes, you watch a lot of tv concerning things like this yeah, I'm obsessed with true crime and everything related to true crime, and when I saw sand mountain in the the title, I was like, oh, hold on a minute.
Speaker 1Wait, what have we got here? So we have the author Lisa Karnshall joining us this morning. Good morning Lisa. How are you?
Speaker 6Hi, I'm great Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1Oh, thanks for joining us. Now you have a book. Is it out yet, or is it about to be released, or what's?
Speaker 6the released. The release date is October 1st. It's being published by the University of Georgia Press, which I know may make some Alabama folks. But yeah, the University of Georgia Press is releasing it on October the 1st. That's the official date. But if people pre-order sometimes it arrives a little bit early.
Sand Mountain Shooting True Crime Book
Speaker 1It's called Midnight Cry, a shooting on Sand Mountain. Now, are you originally from this area? I'm from Horton. From Horton, oh, okay.
Speaker 6Yeah, I'm about as from here as you can get. Yes, I grew up close to Bethany Baptist Church in Horton on a poultry farm, chicken farm out there. A lot of my family's still out there, a lot of Carnes' In fact there's a Carnes Road out there.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 6And so yeah, I'm definitely local Went to Albertville High School, Went to Douglas Elementary and then continued my education in Albertville and then went on and graduated from the University of Alabama and then went to grad school at the University of Georgia.
Speaker 1Well, let's talk about the book Now. Tell us what is the book. It's based on a true story.
Speaker 6Yes, very much. So, yeah, well, it's a story I grew up hearing. In fact, for a long time I thought it was folklore, because you know, when you're a little kid and they're like, once upon a time, this 16-year-old kid had to do this thing. And then, the older I got, I realized that it was an actual event, that had happened, and I also realized, um, I was hearing one sort of perspective on it and I and I've always been a curious soul, and so I carried that story and I say that in the introduction, I carried that story around with me because I thought it was just fascinating, um, on so many levels. You know it's about family and community and you know loyalty and just, you know um trauma. You know the way that one event can tear a community apart, um, or bring other parts of it together.
Speaker 6You know the history of this area was sort of built into a lot of my you know my work too, so, so, yeah, that's that's what inspired me to, to get going on it, to work on it. So, and the older, like I said, I was telling her before we got started, during the COVID you know all the restrictions on COVID I thought, you know, this is time. It's my time. I need to write this book. Finally. I need to write it down. So I don't think of myself really as the author of this book. I'm just the person who wrote the words down from all of the other elements that already were out there.
Speaker 1Well, tell us about the event that happened, that inspired this book. It happened in this area, sure.
Speaker 6Yeah, just a few miles from here. Sure, yeah, just a few miles from here. So on the night of May 17th 1951, a group of officers went out to the home of Aubrey Kilpatrick and gunfire was exchanged and Aubrey Kilpatrick was killed no-transcript. Chief Deputy Washington Bennett Sorry James Lang, also a Marshall County Sheriff's Deputy, and Leonard Floyd, who was the police chief Boaz at the time. And James Lang survived and ended up being a witness in the subsequent trials. But, and you know it really, like I said, marshall County is not a huge county, it's the third smallest county in the state. But the event divided it's almost like you had the mountain people who sympathize more with the Kilpatricks, who were like, hey, if somebody shows up at your house in an unmarked car close to midnight, you know, oh, that a good point.
Speaker 6Yeah, and then. But then the folks down in the mountain. You know the people who were more you know who knew Zeke Boyles and Washington Bennett and James Lane, people you know down the mountain in Guntersville and Brindley and those areas they were more like, yeah, you know people who how should I put it? Sell alcohol, untaxed Moonsunners. They're doing illegal things. I guess it would be sort of like we would think in the modern parlance of like a drug dealer or meth dealer or something like that.
Speaker 2Is that why the police were called out to the home? Was it because of the selling of the?
Speaker 6alcohol? No, and that's really a complicated issue. Oh wow, you have to read in the book. No, actually what had happened was Aubrey Kilpatrick had gotten into an altercation with some of his tenant farmers oh yeah, they had. Apparently the work wasn't getting done that was supposed to get done, and Aubrey got angry and went out, confronted him and and the family's son was younger and a bit of a hothead, and so aubrey ended up pistol whipping one kid and shooting between the legs, like on the ground of another and they ended up um going and swearing out a warrant, so it was not for bootlegging it was for an assault charge, wow.
Speaker 6And there was a lot of. I talked to different people and they'll say well, I heard this and I heard that and I heard that Zeke Bowles had it out for Aubrey Kilpatrick and I try to incorporate a lot of what people say into the book for the most part but I really try to stick to the testimony and the trials I have. You know, james' son, Marty Kilpatrick, marty and Rhonda have been absolutely spectacularly wonderful and so supportive through this whole project and I hope I've done them proud right by this book, um so, but anyway.
Speaker 6But they were able to supply me with a dvd, which was of james and billy kilpatrick, um, who were 16 and 15 respectively when the event happened, and they're uh, it's basically just a video of them talking about the night of the shooting and James' subsequent time in prison, so that was a valuable resource.
Speaker 2Well, I'm super interested. I want to read this book. How can I?
Speaker 6find it. You can preorder on Amazon or Barnes, noble or directly through the University of Georgia Press, or you can attend the reading and signing on October the 5th. The Boaz Legacy Museum has been kind enough to help me launch my book tour, so I will be at the Boaz Legacy Museum on Saturday, october the 5th, from 11 am until pretty much they close the doors or run me off or one of the two.
Speaker 6But yeah, and that's another way that folks can come and get the books and I'll be reading a few passages, mainly the passages that concern Boaz specifically because it's the. Boaz Legacy Museum.
Speaker 2Wow, that's so neat.
Speaker 1So I'm sure everybody's interest is peaking now. So you now need to go get the book, don't you? Whenever the book comes out?
Speaker 6I hope so, and I hope they'll show up to the museum on the 5th, and let me sign a copy and talk to them Is there a chance down the road.
Speaker 1Who knows, we could see this as a movie one day. What do you think? Wouldn't that be good?
Speaker 6Well, you can definitely dream, and I can definitely see Matthew McConaughey playing Aubrey Kilpatrick.
Speaker 1Yes, you can give them all kinds of tips on the set. Well, Lisa, it's a pleasure meeting you. Thank you for sharing something that happened in this area and giving people information because it's new to me. It's something I'll need to read and learn about. I really wasn't familiar with this when I was growing up, but now I am.
Speaker 2Tyler Mays already texted me questions for you. He's one of our Go ahead and no, I can't.
Speaker 1Oh, gotcha Off the air, off the air but he's already. Post-air conversation right, yes, he's already His interest is piqued.
Speaker 2He was a police officer for Albertville and so he wants to know some of the lowdown on this. So we definitely got some interest piqued. And the name of the book is Midnight Cry.
Speaker 6Yes, cry is shooting on Sand Mountain. And Midnight Cry is actually the title of a gospel song. It's one of my it's like my sister Lynn Thrash's favorite gospel song and it talks about if the Midnight Cry will all go home. And since Zeke Boyles and his group of officers arrived close to midnight Sure, and during the testimony, james Kilpatrick, when he got on the stand to testify, one of the attorneys said you know what time was it? And he said it was close to midnight. And he said what do you remember? He goes the main thing I remember is my mother crying, and so I thought it just clicked in my head. But of course I didn't get permission rights to use the title from the people who wrote the song. But that's okay, it's just part of it.
Speaker 2So I know this will be my last question, but I know that there's a true crime element to this and there's a judicial side to this. What would you say is heavier? Is it more on the true crime side or is it more on the judicial?
Speaker 6Well, if I can add another angle to it, it's more anthropological in a way. I'm kind of looking at the way, a time and a place and everything. I mean you could look at immigration patterns from this 18th century and see why certain people came and lived in certain parts of the state, why they came to live there, how that shaped things, like even the liquor law I I mean there's some cultural differences in position here. Guntersville, when they got the local option in 1984, went wet immediately. Boaz didn't go wet until what? 2015?.
Speaker 1Yeah. Took a while, you're right.
Speaker 6I mean so those are some cultural differences just between the people who live on the mountain and people down in the river, and that's sort of one of those timeless human elements.
Speaker 6It's just between the people who live on the mountain and people down in the river, and that's sort of one of those timeless human elements. And so I guess it's kind of my love letter to home, because I'm writing about the place that made me, but then I look at how the place made other people, going back in the past too, and their behaviors and their beliefs, their stubborn resistance to and that kind of thing. So, yeah, I think that was, I think that was the main angle. The true crime just hadn't kind of happened to be. Yeah, because nothing, nothing sort of shocks the community more than you know, the killing of citizens and law enforcement, I mean that really galvanizes a lot of public, for sure.
Speaker 6And and also I think it resonated too with me because during that time, you know, we were experiencing um sort of a wave, the george floyd yeah exactly, and even though all of, obviously all of the principal actors in this book are white, um, I couldn't help but think about sort of the varying degrees of to what are the, the limits or the allowances that law enforcement has? Um, so and it it's not um, you know the out, while james kilpatrick is kind of the focus of the book, it it's not one clear side. You know, I'm not just telling james kilpatrick's story. That's already been done very well by another writer, another Dana Hill, local writer, very nice book. But I guess I wanted to see this dynamic between people who are benevolently living outside the law, because everybody knew what Aububrey kilpatrick was doing. But then you have this other contingent which I guess for reasons of, I don't know, ego or, or you know, or, desire to preserve the law to say, hey, we're, we're not going to allow this to happen in our county.
Speaker 6And what broke my heart was that this 16 year old boy got sucked into sure the affairs, and I realized 16 was adultish. During this time period, you know, 16 year olds could forge their parents signature and go off to war. So, um, but still, I think that was a focal point for me too was to look at how this kid sort of got pulled into this years-long sort of saga.

Yeah, you know, this is the first I'd heard of it. Yeah, it's crazy, though I've lived in this area my whole life, but I've never really heard the story.
Speaker 2so I know she grabbed me outside and was like do you want to hear the nitty-gritty details?
Speaker 1Yeah.
Unusual Truck Accident and Frito Feet
Speaker 2Talk to me before you leave and I said okay, that sounds interesting Uh-huh.
Speaker 1But here's one totally different, different. Check out and see how did this happen in Virginia. I'm looking at the picture on our Facebook page. Picture a tractor trailer. The back part of the 18-wheeler come loose and somehow it's hit a sign. That's you know, those above the interstate, those interstate signs it hit those signs?
Speaker 1Oh my gosh. Not one of the signs on the side of the road, it's on the ground. This one, and they're still investigating, saying how did this happen? And it shut down traffic for like what? Eight hours. In Virginia, one ex-user put on there saying I've always wanted to do this in video games. The sign is up against the tractor trailer is up against the signs in the air, those things are. What about 20 feet or so above and the tractor-trailer come loose and somehow ended up against the signs in midair?
Speaker 2Look at the traffic that is blocking. How long do you think that took?
Speaker 1to get through. It's over eight hours.
Speaker 2Oh my gosh, I didn't expect that long To get this fixed. Wow, well, all of my Bluey fans out there. Please somebody get this Like. Please somebody get this reference. Nice parking spot.
Speaker 1Rita. I'm guessing Rita can't drive, no, but how could this happen? I can see it coming loose from the cab, but then it somehow, I guess, bounced, I don't know how, and it's resting against the sign in the air that's dangerous, like how do you get that down?
Speaker 2how do you go about getting that down?

Speaker 1Let me ask you this question. The story says why do dogs paws smell like Fritos?
Speaker 5Oh, yeah, frito corn chips.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, Doug is guilty.
Speaker 1I didn't know this.
Speaker 2Yeah, so Like you opened up a fresh bag, really yeah, you've never noticed.
Speaker 1I've never been around dogs that much, especially not smelling their feet.
Speaker 2Oh my gosh. So when I'm laying down on the couch, doug comes and rests on my chest and I'll smell his little feet. I love the way it smells, that's like a guilty pleasure.
Speaker 1Okay, I can't help it. They say that some not all some dogs do have their paws that smell like corn chips. And somebody asked a question on Facebook what causes the smell? And there's a doctor, the chief veterinary officer at the American Kennel Club. He says the cause comes down to a shift towards higher levels of certain types of skin bacteria. I didn't know this.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Do you know the rest of the story?
Speaker 2Yes, I knew all of it. Yeah, well, go ahead and tell them tell them okay, well just like in humans, our feet tend to smell yeah, when we get sweaty or, I guess, grungy or dirty, they can have a smell and when the skin's flora changes, which is just like the skin's natural bacteria. That's when feet can tread into smellier territory. Ultimately, frito feet become two types of bacteria. Yeah, and both of them give off an odor that is close to corn chips.
Speaker 1I have no idea.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1No idea.
Speaker 2Yes, and the fix is easy. You just get some like mild blue dawn like dish soap and dilute it down with water and wash their feet.
Speaker 1That is amazing, but I can't help it.
Speaker 2I love the way it smells. I do, I like it. I like it.
Speaker 1You were talking, you said you know how this happens, no idea.
Speaker 6This is all brand new to me but that is amazing yeah.
Speaker 2I like it. Every dog that I've ever had, like family dog, they've always smelled like corn chips. I've had a Yorkie, a weenie dog okay, doug is a rescue mutt, but gotcha, you know, they just all because they can't sweat I've been around some kids that they're.
Speaker 1They get a little when they get older. Not, not babies. Babies don't ever smell bad. But as they begin getting older, like seven, eight, nine, ten some of the body odor does smell like corn chips. Really they have. It's like the armpits have a corn chip smell. Oh, so it makes sense now that they're saying that's some kind of fungus. Yes, bacteria, it's just a matter of washing.
Speaker 2Yeah, just wash and keep them clean.
Speaker 1Okay, now we know, and before we go, the morning's words of wisdom quote of the day. We think Monday, you know, tough day, maybe give you something a little funny.
