Speaker 3It's time to rise and shine and get your morning started with Alabama's award-winning morning show. Six o'clock already.
Speaker 4I was just in the middle of a dream. Get up, we gotta go to work, what? But I can't get late, so then I guess I just won't get paid.
Speaker 3Why do people work? Do any of you people do any actual work? These are the days when you wish your bed was already made. Broadcasting live from high atop Alabama's beautiful Sand Mountain. I don't like Mondays. Tell me why I don't like.
Speaker 4Mondays. Tell me why. No, you don't understand how radio works Monday, Monday.
Speaker 3So good to me. Doesn't hardly seem like work, does it? It sure is Monday hitting it now.
Speaker 4Except for Monday.
Speaker 3Let's get to work. Please welcome your hosts. Just another manic Monday. Barry and Holly Wish it was.
Speaker 1Sunday. Good morning, it's 6.07,. It is a Monday. It's a beautiful, beautiful Monday Boy. It fills with 56 in Fort Payne, 59 here at QSP. Let me ask you, did you have to turn your heat on on the way in this morning?
Speaker 2I thought about it. I'll be honest, I did too. It ran through my head.
Speaker 1It was just a little cool. I'm not used to it coming out to work yet, but it's not going to last much longer because you've got the heat back on today, 86 near 90 tomorrow. Now, later in the week we could get some tropical rain.
Speaker 2Oh tropical.
Speaker 1There is a chance. There is a disturbance moving in through in the Gulf. It's going to move towards Texas and it looks like it's a pretty sure thing of coming ashore in Texas, possibly even as strong as a Category 1 hurricane possibly could be. And the way it's moving, anytime you're on the right side of the hurricane. When it comes to shore, you're on the dirty side and you could get a lot of rain, and that's where we're going to be on this one.
Speaker 2On Thursday.
Speaker 1Thursday this is to guess at the timing. Probably we're already looking at a good chance of rain Thursday. We may get some tropical rain, which means a lot of rain Thursday and it could carry into Friday morning, possibly into even midday Friday.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's like rain, but make it tropical.
Speaker 1A little heavy rain, oh Lord. So as far as football, hopefully their guess is it'll come ashore faster than they're looking at and get on out of here. They make way for Friday night, which could be better weather.
Speaker 2Who does Albertville play Friday night?
Speaker 1That's Sparkman, so we'll be on the road into near Huntsville. Okay, that area, okay. So, speaking of football, congrats to the Hoax Bluff Eagles. This week's WQSB Dixie Designs High School Football Team of the Week had a big win Friday and they'll be picking up the Team of the Week trophy and t-shirts later on this week.
Speaker 2And don't forget, you can listen to all the hoax boy football games on your sister station, wkxx 102.9 alabama's country classics.
Speaker 1hey, they've got some good music that plays over there too during the day. It's basically qsp from 20 years ago.
Speaker 2Yeah, if you love classic country, that's where you need to be tuning in yeah, I gotta mention something.
Speaker 1I've noticed this over the past few days. Um, what would they? Will we talk? We talked about the. Uh, I was at the grocery store, yeah, and a little girl called out my name hey, barry galloway yes, I've noticed more and more over the past week when I'm in places hey, barry galloway, yes, they don't, just say hey, barry, it's Just like that yeah, so.
Speaker 2I make you go on Saturdays and make you Harlow's Pee Wee games, because I literally hate going by myself. I get it, but I've made some friends. Well, you and I have made some friends. I love watching football, yeah, and it's so much fun to watch these. Listen, they take Pee Wee seriously.
Speaker 1They do and they should.
Speaker 2It's not like a little old play game out there. They are taking it seriously.
Speaker 1Sometimes a step too far, like the guy who screamed kill him. I think that's a little much. A little much. I know you want to tackle him, but you can leave it at that. Yeah, the dad seems serious. Yeah, and I want to give some shout-outs later, but that's what Harlow said when she was on the field hey, barry Galloway, I thought that was funny. Yeah, no, I think it's funny. I'm not complaining, I think it's funny. No, we love it, it's not just first name, it's like the full name. The full name, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2We love meeting people. Yes, like if we ever go out to lunch or that Recognize us we're just people.
Speaker 1We're just people. Man On the radio I go to Walmart, like everybody else does. I go to the grocery store. Oh yeah, it's normal.
Speaker 2But the worst is when you have to buy something embarrassing. I'm not going to name out specific things, specifical, specifical things Tropical storm Tropical.
Speaker 1Storm Pacificical is moving towards the gulf coast.
Speaker 2Please seek shelter now category one, but you know what I'm saying. If you've got a cantori's there if you've got a buggy full of embarrassing things and toilet paper yeah, and some egg slacks wedge of cheese yeah, I know your stomach's tore up.
Speaker 1Oh, I have stomach issues. Yeah, no, it's for a friend.
Speaker 2And I feel like people look at my buggy and they judge.
Speaker 1I do, I'm a buggy judger.
Speaker 2Are you a buggy judger?
Speaker 1You look at it and say, oh, I'm not Me. Uh-uh, no, she has some lotion. Oh whoa whoa, whoa.
Speaker 2I don't know what's going on there? What kind of knot is she going?
Speaker 1to have? See, I don't know, you have to just wonder.
Speaker 2Well then, your imagination, yeah, your imagination takes place, I don't know.
Speaker 1Hey, seriously, this is a big day. We've been talking about this for a few weeks because today is the day that we announce our first teacher of the week and our first health care hero of the week. So if you've nominated somebody, we could be calling your name out around 7 10. I think we're even going to call both of the winners, the teacher and the health care hero. Just tell them, thank you for what you do. Yeah, we are, and they each, by the way, won a hundred dollars. Oh so that's awesome'd be nice.
Speaker 1So it's not just a one-time thing. We're going to be doing it every week for the rest of the year and into the next year. So, anyway, the winners will be coming up at 7-10, plus the pet of the week, and we have a lot of stuff going on today.
Speaker 2Yeah, we have a lot.
Speaker 1So let's get busy. It's a brand new week, Monday, September the 9th. Here's things you need to know and need to think about today.
Speaker 2Yeah, so today in 1890, Colonel Harlan Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, was born on this date.
Speaker 1Oh, that's what's his birth certificate?
Speaker 2It would have been 134 years old. I did the math.
Speaker 1I had to use my calculator.
Speaker 4Good job.
Speaker 2Well, thank you. And while other babies were born, sucking their thumbs, colonel Sanders, actually immediately developed the habit of licking his fingers.
Speaker 1And the rest is history. So he didn't suck his thumb. He didn't suck his thumb, he licked his finger.
Speaker 2Well, that's where finger licking good came from.
Speaker 1Oh, I had no idea, little Harlan, what are you doing? Quit licking your fingers, harlan, harlan, quit licking my fingers.
Speaker 2I like that name. My daughter's name is Harlow, so it's close to Harlan.
Speaker 1I like Harlan. That's a name you don't hear very often. Yeah, harlan.
Speaker 2Harlan Colonel Harlan.
Speaker 1Sanders. That's weird.
Speaker 2They named him Colonel when he was born. They knew what was coming. Yeah, they did yeah, and Super Bowl at the Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. How about?
Speaker 1now no, no, no, I'm not saying I'm not a fan, but why don't we get a country?
Speaker 2star Country, yeah Get.
Speaker 1Morgan Wallen Get. Luke Holmes Post Post Malone Get all three of them together. Yes, Get Luke Bryan Anybody. That's country. Why do we always have to get these halftime shows that make me want to sit there for 15 minutes to go? Why? Why am I having to watch this?
Speaker 2I couldn't even tell you Kendrick Lamar's song.
Speaker 1I don't either.
Speaker 2But that is I mean. I think he's really popular.
Speaker 1I don't know. I don't know. I thought he had a brand of chicken. I don't know.
Speaker 2Kendrick's fried chicken. Kendrick's fried chicken? I didn't know, that's Harland, oh sorry. And here's something to think about. A 44-year-old woman in Greece was arrested After it was discovered she intentionally started wildfires because she enjoyed watching firefighters and flirting with them.
Speaker 1No way. This is true, she started fires on purpose to meet firefighters.
Speaker 2Mm-hmm, she started on purpose to watch the firefighters come out. She got a thing for firefighters and she wanted to flirt with them. Wow yeah, it gives a new meaning to the phrase matchcom, Matchcom. Be careful what you're looking for.
Speaker 1That's funny, it's 614.
Speaker 3Mornings with Barry and Hall here on Alabama's country giant WQSB.
Speaker 1Hey QSB, how about Kane Brown put some aisles on it. Did you see where Kane is getting a special award coming up? No, the People's Choice Country Awards are coming up on September 26th and it's been revealed he will be honored during the ceremony with this year's Country Champion Award.
Speaker 5Oh.
Speaker 1Now it's something new that they started for this award show. It recognizes an artist's passion for service and for groundbreaking contributions to the country music industry and beyond. And I think just from what I know and we've seen about Kane because we were at CRS back a few months ago- yeah, march, and he was the.
Speaker 1Humanitarian of the Year Award for his works with the Boys and Girls Clubs and all he's done. And he was the humanitarian of the year award for his uh works with the boys and girls clubs and all he's done because he was part of that. They helped him when he was little. Yeah, I think he has a passion and he got so emotional over that yeah you could tell that's something he really feels deeply about yeah, that was real, those were real emotions.
Morning Radio Chat
Speaker 1It was so congrats to kane. He'll be picking up this award during the award show coming up on September 26th. 6.24, feeling good this morning. We're in the 50s in most spots, 55 in Fort Payne, 59 here. It's going to be a warm day getting back to normal. Sunny 86 will be the high later on this afternoon and a lot of stuff coming up. We'll be talking about our Teacher of the Week, our Healthcare Hero of the Week. We'll be announcing our first two winners coming up around 7-10, plus the pet of the week. And I've seen the pet of the week picture.
Speaker 2Oh, it's cute oh is it already up? Let me see no no, no, it's not up yet.
Speaker 1Oh, this is a cute one. It's a cat.
Speaker 2I think it pops up at 7.
Speaker 1All we'll say is it's a cat so cute and that's coming up at 7, 10. And, by the way, thank you again to our podcast. Uh, sponsors uh, anna weathers smith with main street realty plus and miguel corona with allstate insurance. They're sponsored for the entire month. Speaking of our podcast, now over the weekend we put up the friday show podcast and a lot of listeners and then everybody who commented. We uh then put your name into a drawing and pulled out one name and we have a podcast winner. Now this winter they win is it? Four tickets to the tennessee aquarium.
Speaker 2Yep four tickets. So who's the winner? Kirsten hicks is our winner. Way to go kirsten kirsten and I've already sent you a facebook message, so just check your messages and you can come and pick those up anytime so we'll be contacting you.
Speaker 1And don't forget today when our new podcast goes up around 9.30 or so be sure and listen to it, click on it, listen to it, comment on it. You could be tomorrow's winner. What are we giving away tomorrow, do?
Speaker 2we know yet. Listen, this is one that I would want to win. We're going to give away two tickets to Tigers for Tomorrow.
Speaker 1Man Love Tigers for Tomorrow Love. So the next podcast winner will win those tickets. Since you've been gone, since you've been gone, since you've been gone, there's still some mad people. If you have DirecTV, I bet your weekend was not a fun one. If you love sports like football, this is such a bad thing.
Speaker 2Over the weekend, directv has filed a complaint with the FCC against Disney. Wow, directv has filed a complaint with the FCC against Disney, accusing the company of not negotiating in good faith with the midst of ongoing blackout of Disney on TV networks so that includes ESPN and ABC, and that's where the football games were.
Speaker 1A lot of ESPN, especially college.
Speaker 2It blocked ABC and ESPN from DirecTV in the middle of the kickoff of football.
Speaker 1That's awful. And now you've got Dancing with the Stars coming up soon on ABC. So all the new TV shows are coming out in the next few weeks and if you have DirecTV, you're not seeing any of these.
Speaker 2Let me tell you Just switch to YouTube TV. There's no drama over there, I like it.
Speaker 5I love YouTube TV. Yeah, just switch to.
Speaker 1YouTube TV. Yeah, there's no drama over there. I like it. I love YouTube TV. Yeah, is that what you use? It is.
Speaker 2I like it better than Charter.
Speaker 1Yeah, we have it on here, right in front of us in the control room.
Speaker 2That's true. Yeah, we have it here. I love it.
Speaker 1No complaints at all.
Speaker 2And then this story is so scary. Walmart has expanded the recall brand you know that's walmart's brand apple juice due to high arsenic levels. Oh, this is dangerous. Yes, I know, it's including 133 000 cases from various brands. Other impacted retailers include aldi and walgreens. I know the effective products were sold in multiple states and various bottle sizes. So what do you do? Just avoid apple juice.
Speaker 1I guess especially the Great Value brand right now.
Speaker 2That's scary.
Speaker 1Until, you know, until they get this straightened out.
Speaker 2You can't give your kids arsenic.
Speaker 1No, because my kids, when they were little, they loved apple juice.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, my kids love apple juice. They love it. They love Capri Suns.
Speaker 1We've been looking for the bottles, yet Can't find them anywhere, not yet.
Speaker 2But in case you missed it, capri Sun is releasing big boy bottles, that's a good move. Yes, it is a good move.
Speaker 1Because, Capri Suns are good, because I feel weird when I'm going walking down the street, you know, holding my little.
Speaker 2Capri Sun pouch and my straw.
Speaker 1Well, you should feel weird, my tiny baby straw, but now I get me a bottle.
Speaker 2It's the funniest little straw in the world.
Speaker 1It makes you have to pucker up your mouth just to get some juice out of it.
Speaker 2Or do it like nectar, like hold the bottom of it.
Speaker 1Or just take it, I know.
Speaker 2This is what I do sometimes. I punch a hole in where the hole goes with the straw and then just squeeze it, I mean with the straw you feel like a little human hummingbird there trying to suck juice out of the hole. Adult mouths are not meant for Capri Sun pouches.
Speaker 1Give us big boy straws.
Speaker 2Well, they're going to. And then this is neat 32-year-old actress Selena Gomez has become one of the youngest billionaires in the United States.
Speaker 1You said billion.
Speaker 2Right, I said billion with a, B.
Speaker 1Now, this is not just from acting. She does other stuff too.
Speaker 2Well, her financial success is actually because of her brand of makeup called Rare Beauty.
Speaker 1Okay now. Have you tried that? Have you used that?
Speaker 2It's too expensive for me.
Speaker 1Oh, okay.
Speaker 2But it's generated $1.1 billion of her $1.3 billion net worth. That's amazing, wow. So if she didn't have this brand, would that mean she was worth $3 million?
Speaker 1I guess so.
Speaker 2Dang. That's a big difference.
Speaker 1Yeah, but she also does something with like mental health.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, she's a huge mental health advocate and she discovered Wondermind, which is the organization for mental health Gotcha.
Speaker 1I love that. I love her action. She was on the Disney Channel for a while. Was it Wizards of?
Speaker 2Waverly Place. Waverly Place, yeah.
Speaker 1And she's on Only Murders in the Building, whatever that is yes, steve. Martin Martin Short. Yes, she's on another season of that. She's got her hand in a lot of stuff producing now.
Speaker 1Mm-hmm, and she's so cool, I just love her. A billionaire, that's amazing. Yeah, it's $629. Us. Wow. So again, chevrolet will be stuck at number two for the third straight week, but still number two. Can you really complain about being number two when the music? Well, you can like football and sports, yes, but like in the music business, I mean I know you want the number one, but still number two.
Speaker 2Two that means you're still selling a lot of records oh yeah, a lot of albums I wouldn't complain about the money, but I'd still want to be number one. You still want. You want to say hey I got number one.
Speaker 1This was a number one song. Yeah, in 2024 for four days because when you get on stage, you're going to say you're not going to say this was the number two song back in 2024 yeah people are going to go oh and up next our number two song yeah, you, ooh couldn't quite hit number one, could you?
Speaker 1Ooh, that's sad, yeah, yeah. Hey, yeah things to talk about. We're coming up in just a few minutes. We've got the brand new Lainey Wilson song 4x4xU. That is confusing. No, it's not, but the way it's written at it it's a 4X, 4x letter U.
Speaker 2That's 4x4 by you.
Speaker 1I know, but when you're in this business you have to look at the screen real quick and just say what you see. I know.
Speaker 2Your mind has to work. Is it a capitalized X? I know small X's Good good, but is it in the computer with the capitalized?
Speaker 1X. Don't know, it's coming up in a few minutes.
Speaker 2Okay, well, I hope it's not.
Speaker 1Yeah, but that's our future hit and it's going to be a big one too, so we'll play that for the first time, coming up in about 10 minutes. Other things I didn't realize. You took a picture of me this morning.
Speaker 2Yeah, I did.
Speaker 1Why are you sneaking around?
Speaker 2I'm just being real creepy. Now you can look at my desk again. I know, you know what, though, I have learned in my many years of crafting and working and creating and artistry for real that a clean workspace is not the sign of a creative mind I think a chaotic I'm serious really.
Speaker 2I think a chaotic workspace because your, your mind is moving so many different ways. I want this and I need this and I need that and there's things you want to store on there. There's pictures of reed, there's pictures of reagan, there's awards you've won, there's a rolodex dated back from 1972. Yeah, the rolodex is there. I mean like it, it shows you're just a real person. But I did an appreciation post. I said did you know that? What?
Speaker 1I'm looking at what you wrote. That's very sweet.
Speaker 2Well thanks, I appreciate that well it was an appreciation post because I do. I come in at 5 o'clock every morning, sometimes earlier, not to too long.
Speaker 1You do Not to too long. Well, like Mondays, you said you couldn't sleep because you're excited about coming and doing the show.
Speaker 2I know I'm just so excited. But I come in and you a packet of papers, have to go over and read them. Understand my stories, we talk about them. So we spend from 5 to 6 talking about the stories that we're going to do for the day. Somebody told me one time I know you only work 6 to 9. Could you help me move after 9 o'clock? Yeah, that's how you felt. We don't get out of here till lunch after lunch time, yeah yeah, you're right and by the time the show is over, we've been up.
Speaker 2I do get up at 3 30, but it's usually to fix my hair. Don't look at it today I didn't fix it today.
Speaker 1You said, you fell back asleep.
Speaker 2I did, yeah, I got it, yeah yeah, I did well, my dog needed out, and so I lay down on the couch for a minute and then the rest is history. But we've had some amazing comments on this post.
Speaker 1These are very nice. And, by the way, when you look at the desk, what do you see on my desk? What do you see?
Speaker 2Okay, I see.
Speaker 1We did this back months ago when we first started the show together. We took a picture of our desk and people would guess which desk was which.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, I definitely see. The Rolodex is number one. I like your trophy that John Gladden and Keith Bogg and Chris. Jenkins gave you.
Speaker 1Yes.
Speaker 2Love that you got your bottle of water, your tape.
Speaker 1What is that Listerine doing there?
Speaker 2I don't know where it came from. I'm not sure why, it's there.
Speaker 1I'm not sure why it's there.
Speaker 5Do you use it? I have, I don't know, throw it away.
Speaker 1I will. It's like I have a bottle of Oosteroom.
Speaker 2Have you ever thought about tidying up your desk?
Speaker 1I have, and then it always ends up back the same. I say well, just the heck with it.
Speaker 2Okay, I like all these post-it notes that you have for yourself. I have to have reminders. I like the one and sign out Like you. Don't do that every day of your life.
Speaker 1We started a new thing a few months ago that you have to sign in with your fingerprint to prove you're in the building. Thank you, Rachel.
Speaker 4She's tough.
Speaker 1I think she worked for the CIA. At one point she's tough she is.
Speaker 2She's a time clock. What do I call it? A time clock ruler?
Speaker 5Ruler.
Speaker 2Ruler of the time clock. Anyway, what do I call it? A time clock ruler, Ruler, yeah yeah, ruler of the time clock.
Speaker 1Anyway, what do you have to say about your desk? Everything is where it needs to be. I know where it's at. Yeah, I know which pile is which.
Speaker 2And that's the thing. Like, if you go into my craft room you might see, oh my gosh, this is such a mess. But I can tell you where the scissors is, where the glue is, but if I were to clean it, I don't know where any of that stuff's at anymore.
Speaker 1You can ask me who we're going to pick for Pet of the Week this week and I have a folder with all the names in it. Boom, there it is. Yeah, but there's some nice comments. Thank you, Jamie Talley. I appreciate that. Let me put these back in the newest.
Speaker 2I like Kelly Frazier's the best, because it says thank you, Barry, and your hair looks amazing.
Speaker 1Oh, she's kissing up, she's not. That goes back to Friday. It's so back to last week's show, yeah.
Speaker 2When people were bragging on you about how great oh Holly's hair, oh there was like two comments, Barry, and I don't think you should get jealous of my two comments.
Speaker 1No, no, I'm jealous.
Speaker 2Because I don't get them very often.
Speaker 1Oh you get them every day.
Speaker 2No, I treasure them. I treasure them when I do.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2I don't get jealous like you do.
Speaker 1Well, Cheryl Lake at Village School. Thank you, here's Kim. I know Kim Crowley. I know Kim. Thank you very much. That's a very nice comment. Let's see Brenda Lee Hammett. Very nice comment. Jonathan Carter says I get to work at 3 30 way to go, jonathan. Yeah, he wished the morning show started at five.
Speaker 2That's a big ask. We could do that. I could do it. Well, they had. One is two. Then pay us the same amount of money, right, mississippi? No, she's coming in today, don't call her out.
Speaker 1I'm sorry. Okay, well, you go ahead and read some. I'll go ahead and prepare for spanking.
Speaker 2Hold on.
Speaker 1There's Annie Finley, yes.
Entertainment News and Morning Show Chatter
Speaker 2Annie's always so supportive of us. Shannon Owens says he's awesome, dylan Gordon says Barry's a dog A dog D-A-W-G. D-a-w-g, that simple, pure breed dog.
Speaker 1Well, that is cool. Yeah, I like that. You must want some tickets.
Speaker 2Yeah, no, these people are commenting because they appreciate you. They don't want anything from you.
Speaker 1They're very nice. Donna Rogers, andrea Tidwell let's see here. Stephanie Jones, michelle Norwood, love Michelle, love Hunter he's one of our biggest listeners. Yeah, maybe he's up listening this morning.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1He's in the ice cream business, does an amazing job with that. Thank you, michelle. And just some very nice comments. We appreciate that. But I come in early because I'm just what's the morning show and I get in early because you can get so much done when nobody's in the building bothering you. I know, I know, I know people want to talk because they haven't probably talked to anybody all weekend. But you're there in the middle of something. Look over there, somebody prairie dogging by your desk. Looking over, you want to talk football with their head hanging over like they're just jumped out of the desert and prairie dogging. And you said yes, and it's usually something that probably could have waited till you finished what you were doing, but nope, gotta tell you right then and let me tell you, I have never been a morning person my whole entire life, ever, and since working the morning show.
Speaker 2I had to get used to it. But I love mornings. Now, yeah, they're so peaceful and quiet. And I don't get a lot of peace and quiet, no, but it's so nice being one of the only ones out on the road and all the green lights are green.
Speaker 1Yes, the coffee is fresh, except that one next to CVS. I wish the road department would look at it. Every morning it catches me at 329. It stays there for three minutes. Three. That may not seem like much in your world. It doesn't, but it allows every side, like the left, the right, the turn lanes. It gives them a minute each.
Speaker 2See, I'm like I'm opposite of you. I'm like, oh, this is three-minute break that I get to listen to one more song.
Speaker 1No, I want to get to listen to one more song. No, I want to get to work so I can wake Scott up until I get busy, because he's asleep usually.
Speaker 2No, he's not.
Speaker 1Thank you for the comments. That's very nice. Thank you for posting that. I appreciate that. Oh yeah, it's 646.
Speaker 3Barry and Holly on Alabama's Country, Giant WQSB.
Speaker 2I'm ready. Busy weekend.
Speaker 1We, I'm ready. Busy weekend. We were talking about Beetlejuice, beetlejuice. Some of the reviews came out were not very kind, but then here's what matters. The movie has already made all of the money back. It took to produce it. And then some, it had a huge weekend. Yep, beetlejuice. Beetlejuice brought in $110 million.
Speaker 2It cost about $100 million to produce, so it's netting about $110 million. It cost about $100 million to produce, so it's netting about $10 million.
Speaker 1It's already made a profit in only one week.
Speaker 2I know and I've heard such mixed reviews, but I still want to see it.
Speaker 1I do because I love Michael Keaton. He's one of my favorite actors. Yeah, he's so funny.
Speaker 2Deadpool and Wolverine are still going strong at $7.2 million, and then the movie Reagan, yeah with Dennis Quaid as Ronald Reagan. Yeah.
Speaker 1It's based on part of his life.
Speaker 2Yeah, it brought in $5.2 million. That's a big jump from Beetlejuice bringing in $110 million to Reagan bringing in $5.2 million.
Speaker 1I've read some people's posts and they went to see it and couldn't get in because some of the shows were sold.
Speaker 2On Reagan.
Speaker 1No, no, no.
Speaker 2On.
Speaker 1Beetlejuice, beetlejuice, yeah, so there's plenty of room for Reagan.
Speaker 2We've said it so many times he should be showing up by now.
Speaker 1He should be. Yeah, look over your shoulder. Oh, I forgot about that.
Speaker 2Look over your shoulder, oh okay. Nbc is reducing the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon to only four nights a week. Now Times are changing. Yep, they show he will be joining the other late night programs on CBS and ABC to a four night week. Meanwhile, jimmy Fallon has expected to expand his creative projects to include game shows, music, albums and children's books.
Speaker 1He is so good. I really like him. I love Jimmy Fallon. I do too. Real quick. They're doing this to save money. Nbc has made some big cuts. Seriously Seth Meyers, who follows Jimmy Fallon. They even fired his band back a few months ago, so now he has no band. What? No, they got rid of his band.
Speaker 2They can't be that expensive.
Speaker 1I wouldn't think so, but I guess it's expensive enough.
Speaker 2God, that's scary, it is, that's scary.
Speaker 1They're making big cuts, Big cuts yeah.
Speaker 2Beginning on October 8th, Wendy's will offer a meal that will transport you to Bikini Bottom. Oh, I love SpongeBob. They're going to be introducing several SpongeBob SquarePants meals as part of the show's 25th anniversary. What's crazy is I remember watching the beginning episodes of. Spongebob. I loved it.
Speaker 1It was one of the few that I could sit and watch with the kids and I didn't mind it because it has some adult-type humor that's funny, it does yeah. And they're well-written. It's just so goofy, so silly, but the kids love it and I can still go back and watch some of the old ones and still laugh.
Speaker 2It doesn't bother me yeah, I still laugh about it the Wendy show's signature Krabby Patty. So you can actually go and buy a Krabby Patty, a pineapple under the sea frosty I wonder what that's going to taste like, I don't know and a hot and crispy medium fry. Wendy's Krabby Patty will be a premium cheeseburger with a secret Krabby Patty sauce. So it comes with a secret sauce.
Speaker 1I've already talked to somebody who has had one.
Speaker 2Once I met this guy?
Speaker 3who knew this guy? Who knew this guy? Who knew this guy? Who knew this guy? Who knew this guy, who knew this guy's cousin?
Speaker 2Was it Russell?
Speaker 1Well, and he said yes.
Speaker 2I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready. I'm ready Russell.
Speaker 1Russell's tried one. He loves it.
Speaker 2Russell you got to give us the dips on the Krabby Patty sauce.
Speaker 1Come on, russell, yeah, come off of it. I want to know what's in there. Some compare Russell to a human version of Plankton. I disagree.
Speaker 2Oh no, I think he'd be more like a definitely Spongebob.
Speaker 1Which we can't go to the Wendy's in Albertville because they've got it gutted.
Speaker 2It's closed for months and months and months, but Russell's been at Boaz, so if you're missing Russell Johnson, you can go see him at Boaz.
Speaker 1He's just hanging out in Albertville laying around in the empty building yeah it's 656.

We're doing Healthcare Hero, which we'll be talking about in a few minutes, but also the Teacher of the Week, and we've been talking about this for a couple of weeks. Holly, we have our first winner of this of the school year, and I thank you to Howard Bentley, Buick, GMC and Albertville for helping us do this and we're going to be giving $100 to one lucky person, and she's on the phone right now. It's our first teacher of the week.
Speaker 2Yes, it is. It's Ms Catherine Sims from Guntersville High School. Hello, hey, ms Sims. How are you doing? Doing good, how about?
Speaker 5you guys.
Speaker 2We're doing good. How does it feel to be our very first Teacher of the Week?
Speaker 5It is such an honor it feels awesome.
Speaker 2That's great. I have to tell you that one of your students actually submitted it and it said that you were a light on his dark days.
Speaker 5Wow, oh my goodness. Yeah, I don't think that you could get a greater compliment. His dark days Wow, oh my goodness.
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't think that you could get a greater compliment as a teacher.
Speaker 5Yeah, oh, that's so precious. This will make me tear up.
Speaker 1So how long have you been teaching, Catherine?
Speaker 5I have been teaching. This is my second full year. I've really only taught one full year.
Speaker 1Wow, you've already made a big impact. Then Way to go.
Speaker 5I'm still learning the ropes, but I'm glad that at least I'm someone's light on a dark day. That means a lot.
Speaker 1Well, you're a teacher at Guntersville High School. Now what classes do you teach?
Speaker 5I teach freshman English, regular and advanced level.
Speaker 1Well, very good. Well, we're doing a great job. We're going to send you $100. You can use this for in your classroom, anything you'd like to do with it, and you mentioned that the new school, by the way, looks beautiful. You should be in the new school sometime, maybe first part of the year, of next year, is that right?
Speaker 5Yes sir, yes sir.
Speaker 1Well, congratulations on being our Teacher of the Week and keep doing what you're doing, because you are changing lives, and thank you so much for talking to us on the radio.
Speaker 5I will thank you guys.
Speaker 1You're welcome. And there it is, catherine Sims, guntersville High School, our first Teacher of the Week. We'll be doing this every week. If you want to nominate somebody, go to our website, wqsbcom. Click on Teacher of the Week. Give us the name of the teacher where they teach. We'll have another winner next Monday and we have more winners right now Before we get to the other winners, so we've got to hurry on this part.
Speaker 2Yes, we'll hurry, We'll hurry. We don't want them to be late. So Harlow and Lakin Cox from well, I don't want to say where they're going to school, but Harlow and Lakin Cox Harlow is my daughter they had a great game at the Douglas Eagles A-Team Won the game. Sure did Miss Beth Gar. It was amazing. So shout out to Bentley, he did an amazing job on the field as well.
Speaker 1Yeah, bentley Garment had a chance to meet Bentley. Yeah, I love Bentley and you're right, lakin played a great game.
Speaker 2He did. And then our little cheer squad of our own McKinley Briley, natalie, eliana. Hello to you all and thank you for listening to the morning show.
Speaker 1That's very sweet, yes. So let's move on to some more winners.
Speaker 5Okay.
Speaker 1We also have our healthcare hero of the week, which we're starting today. This could be anybody in the healthcare field we're talking doctors, nurses, first responders.
Speaker 2Chiropractors.
Speaker 1Yes, it could be anybody. Somebody asked if I work at a nursing home. Yes, oh goodness. Yes, yes, you're in the health care field. Whatever you do, if you'd like to nominate somebody to do so, I think we're going to call our health care hero in just a few minutes. Let's go ahead and tell her who it is. It's Tessa Crane, and Tessa is our first health care hero of the week. Tessa's an RN at Alabama Home Health and she's going to receive $100 from WQSP and SoCo Roofing and Restoration. And to nominate somebody, go to our website at WQSBcom. We're going to call Tessa coming up in just a minute, but one winner we can call is our Pet of the Week.
Speaker 2Yes, have you seen the picture on Facebook?
Speaker 1This is one of the cutest pictures we've had.
Speaker 2You've got to refresh it and look at it. Oh my goodness.
Speaker 1This is.
Speaker 2Soul the Cat. The owner is michelle barnhill. They are so excited about this. When I gave them a call that they won. They could not believe that soul is going to be featured on the billboard and he's dressed up it. I couldn't tell if it was like a little dino. Yeah, like a little dino or a little harry potter. Either way, it's adorable.
Speaker 1He has a little hat you can see the picture on their Facebook and it'll be on their billboard coming up. And the Soul and Souls owner, michelle Barnhill, is going to win a $20 gift card from Food City of Albertville in Gadsden, a Pet of the Week t-shirt from Dixie Designs of Boaz, and we're also donating a $20 Food City gift card to Second Chance Animal Shelter Boaz in their honor. So thank you, soul. The Cat is our pet of the week and you can see that picture on their Facebook page. And before we move on, how about being on Monday? You know Mondays are tough for a lot of people. I thought we'd maybe find something a little funny, a little humorous as far as our quote of the day. So what have you got today?
Speaker 2So this one's from Bill Murray, and it says whatever you do, always give 100%, unless you're donating blood.
Speaker 1Don't give 100% Ben. But he's right. Always, no matter what it is, no matter what your job is, give 100%. That way, when you leave and you go home, you say I did all I could do today. I did my best.
Speaker 2Unless you're giving blood.
Speaker 1Giving blood, don't give all of it. Know, don't give all of it because you won't be going home.
Speaker 3No, it's 7, 14 mornings with barry and holly here on alabama's country, giant wqsb care hero.
Speaker 1I think we need some medical kind of music. What do you think?
Health Care Hero Fast Food Fun
Speaker 1oh, yeah that's pretty good. Yeah, so we're announcing our first health care hero of the week, and thank you again to soco roofing and restoration for helping us sponsor this. And we're announcing our first healthcare hero of the week, and thank you again to SoCo Roofing and Restoration for helping us sponsor this, and we're going to be giving $100 every week to our healthcare hero. Could be any type of healthcare field and I believe we have Tessa. Tessa Crane is our first winner. Tessa, good morning, how are you doing?
Speaker 4I'm doing good guys.
Speaker 1You're from Fort Payne, right, correct?
Speaker 5Now, what do you do, Tessa? What do you do exactly? I'm a registered nurse for Alabama Home.
Speaker 6Care and.
Speaker 5I do home health.
Speaker 1That is a tough job, that is a great job. That is a tough job yes, how long have you been doing that, tessa?
Speaker 5About two years now.
Speaker 1Well, you do it so well. People have nominated you and we've selected you as our first winner. You and we've selected you as our first winner. We're going to send you $100 to use in any way you'd like to use it. How about that?
Speaker 5Sounds good. Thank you guys.
Speaker 1You're welcome. Thank you so much, tessa. We appreciate it. Have a great day and we'll talk to you again soon, okay, alright, bye-bye. That's Tessa Crane from Fort Payne. She is our first health care hero and if you want to nominate somebody or nominate yourself, don't be scared of it Go to the website, wqsbcom.
Speaker 1Send us your name, your information on where you work, maybe a contact phone number. For sure We'll have another winner coming up next Monday. Get in my belly, come on. You know, for all the times for Wendy's and Albertville to close for remodeling, they've got some good stuff coming. I know they're bringing back the vanilla frosty. We've already mentioned the Spongebob-inspired pineapple under-the-sea frosty that's coming and the Spongebob Happy Meals that are coming. And, like we mentioned, yes, we've been waiting on the vanilla frosty to come back. It's coming back. They say that the summer's triple berry frosty has been replaced by the vanilla frosty, but it's only back for a limited time, until October 7th. That's when the new Spongebob Squarepants Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty will be coming in. That has. I can't wait to taste this one, but this has kind of like a mango pineapple-y type taste. You're turning your nose up, yeah ew no.
Speaker 4You lost me at mango.
Speaker 2You lost me All. Right, I mean I would give it a go. Sure, now listen, they had the pumpkin spice last year and it wasn't bad.
Speaker 1It wasn't bad at all. So, vanilla, it's back for a while, just for about a month, so enjoy.
Speaker 2Yep, McDonald's just dropped new breakfast snack wraps in Canada. I know it's a long drive. I know it's a long drive. There's three new wraps designed for breakfast. There's a sausage, bacon and egg breakfast wrap. There's a chicken breakfast wrap and a spicy egg and hash brown wrap. Those sound good.
Speaker 1So these have like pieces of hash browns in the wraps.
Speaker 2In every one of them they have a little hash brown. They got a little mayo, they got a little. Some of them's got the chicken, the eggs, they got everything you would want.
Speaker 1Sounds pretty good, and something that's going to be fun is the new McDonald's Happy Meals and I got to tell you you showed me one of the toys that you get in the current Happy Meals and it wasn't even opened, which tells me that it wasn't a very good Happy Meal toy for the kids.
Speaker 2No, it was a throwaway toy.
Speaker 1What is it exactly?
Speaker 2It's like a keychain and it's just like this plush.
Speaker 1It's just there's nothing to it, so the girls didn't even want to open it.
Speaker 2No, they didn't even open it, it just went straight to them.
Speaker 1Okay, now the new ones I think are going to be a hit.
Speaker 2Yeah, so these are cute. These were released overseas and now they're coming to the United States. Crocs Happy Meals. You heard me, crocs.
Speaker 1Tiny little Crocs like keychains.
Speaker 2Yes, they're so cute. And while the designs may vary for the American release, some Crocs toys spotted abroad featured the McDonald's logo, the fries and the McNuggets. Release date is to be announced.
Speaker 1I'm hoping they're more of a plastic and not that foamy squishy stuff like the last toys. I would hope these look cute. You can see the picture, by the way, on our Facebook page. It's 723.
Speaker 3On Alabama's country, giant wqsb okay, come on man story.
Speaker 1This one kind of hits home a little bit because it happened to one of the kids when they were little. They got like a little lego piece, but it was able to get it out okay I think it was reed, because he loved legos and had a little. I think it was one of the little tiny heads you put on the little people, oh no, on his nose.
Speaker 2Why do they do that I? Don't know why do kids go for the nose, why it could be worse. Anyway, tell me the story. There's other possibilities. Oh yeah, I just called that.
Speaker 1But I'm glad they went for the nose. But a stuck in his nose for 25 years. He sneezed in the shower, discovered a small toy came out and it was part of a Lego Guy's 32. He remembers playing with Legos a lot when he was little. He remembers putting one up in his nose and he said come to think of it. It never came out until now. He says I'm not like you asked. He said I'm not entirely sure what possessed me to do this back when I was seven, other than the fact that it was the right size and it was the perfect place to put it. So it went up into where they couldn't get it out. Now it has come out during a hard sneeze.
Speaker 2Can you imagine the relief he felt after that came out of his nose?
Speaker 1Well, I'm sure they gave him an option If we can do surgery, or we can do this, or it may come out on its own, or you can pick it out, possibly if you go deep enough, which some people do.
Speaker 2No, that would just shove it back in Especially at red lights. Hey, you've got a funny story you've got to tell about things being stuck inside of you for years.
Speaker 5Let's clarify that quickly.
Speaker 2Wait a minute. Wait a minute Because this is the arm.
Speaker 1This is nowhere other than the arm. This is no other orifice than that one. That's not even orifice either. But it was then. No, when I was little I don't remember how old I was, but my brother, uh, donnie, had a bb gun. He decided he was gonna do some target practice. How much older than you, four, five, six years old? Okay, older, so he's gonna. He said hey, why don't you run back and forth in front of me? In front of me, I'm gonna try to see if I can hit you, being an idiot, idiot being the young. I said sure, no problem, I thought I was fast.
Speaker 2You were in target practice. Yeah, I was target practice.
Speaker 1So that's the fourth or fifth time he was missing, until he finally hit me right in the arm.
Speaker 2Oh, with a BB gun, with a BB gun.
Speaker 1So we went to the doctor and he looked at it and said it's in there, yeah. And I said we Maybe it actually didn't go in there, Maybe it just hit the arm and fell out, but there was a hole and everything was fine.
Speaker 4Okay.
Speaker 1But the mother went crazy because she thought what if you'd hit him in the head?
Speaker 2Oh yeah, what if you hit him in the eye?
Speaker 5Oh, yeah, you don't think about that, but then, years went by.
Speaker 1Years later, like my senior year in school, I had this knot come up on my arm. It looked like a little day surgery. I was sitting up in the office. He cut into it and all I heard is old noah's going like he hit like a metal. He said you had a bullet in your arm. He said a bullet. He said well, a bb. Basically, he said did you get shot? And I had a thing for me. I said, as a matter of fact, yes. When I was about five, six years old, I did my brother, yeah so that's so funny.
Speaker 2The funny part is, everybody's so worried like oh no, what is this up on you? What?
Speaker 1if he loses his arm it could be cancerous.
Speaker 2Doctor said it could be some kind of tumor he plays football, he can't lose his throwing arm, whatever all of a sudden dink so that got the bullet, yeah, so it can happen I like that story.
Speaker 3Story 740. Wqsb Mornings with Barry and Holly.
Speaker 1Look who's back. Rachel fresh off of her 10-year class reunion.
Speaker 2Rachel had a big weekend.
Speaker 1She did 10 years. Can you believe it's been 10 years since she graduated Only 10. Yeah.
Speaker 2Mine's about to be 20, so I know that can't be true. Because, I'm about to be 20. My 20-year reunion in like two years.
Speaker 4Okay, so mine was really my 30th 30th yes.
Speaker 1Oh how did it go?
Speaker 4It was fantastic. We had a great time. Any drama, any gossip?
Speaker 2No, not really Not that we would know because you're from mobile area, right, yeah, right, okay. Well, you know, sometimes people get crazy at those things. They get a little loose-lipped, yeah, a little bit, and then so-and-so throws a punch at so-and-so. That's how all mine went. We had no fighting, no, fighting, no, yeah, usually the cops show up.
Speaker 1I always show up at mine you know something weird, what rachel said back in the day she was voted most likely to appear on a successful morning show.
Speaker 2Oh, my God, Look at her now Look at her.
Speaker 5now I know it. Dream come true.
Speaker 1They were correct with that oh wow, wow, wow. Dreams can come true, it's like knowledge nuggets. People have been dreaming of, oh, what will she say this time? What People have been dreaming of, oh, what will she say this time? What will Holly teach us? What have you got today?
Speaker 2Gather around children Gather around. Yes, 38% of people say hugging somebody brings them instant happiness. I'm a no on this.
Speaker 1I am too.
Speaker 2I don't like to be hugged oh.
Speaker 4I do, you do Are you a hugger, I'm surprised that number's so low.
Speaker 1Well, really.
Speaker 4Yeah, it really makes me smile when I see a friend.
Speaker 2Yeah, and you give them a hug?
Speaker 4Yeah, I give them a hug, it makes you smile.
Speaker 2Well, you're right, when I see a friend, like out at Walmart or something, I give them a hug, but like coming into work, I'm not like, oh, it's so good to see you.
Speaker 1I think some huggers give all other huggers a bad name. There's always the one that walks up, hugs, wraps both the legs around you, then moans and says your name oh my God, I know who is hugging you like this. Barry, I can't, I'm not going to throw them out. Is this part of your fan club? This is my family, my goodness.
Speaker 2Wrapping the legs around. This is my family. Speaking of 23% of cheaters on a snake or reptile. Oh yeah, Does that make them a snake? Oh, 23%. Now I will tell you, my girls had a play date yesterday and they had two bearded dragons Speaking of reptiles.
Speaker 1Those were awesome. Kids had one of those when they were little and they loved it.
Speaker 2Yeah, they're really cool.
Midnight Cry
Speaker 1But don't feed them. Crickets from the yard.
Speaker 2Did it kill it? Learn the hard way? No.
Speaker 1Chewed its leg off. I'm not kidding the cricket Crickets.
Speaker 4I didn't know, I'm not kidding.
Speaker 1The cricket Crickets. I didn't know, I didn't know. I thought it was a cricket.
Speaker 2Wait a minute, slow down. You had a cricket from the yard.
Speaker 1When we bought it, they said you need to come to the pet store to get these special crickets. I thought, yeah, that's a good sales pitch.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
Speaker 1But they were not lying, because sure enough, I hadn't caught one. Put it in there. Come home the next day I noticed, oh, he's being awfully still today. The next day, you haven't moved a bit, have you buddy? The third day he still hadn't moved. Now, look, he only had three legs and he was no longer with us.
Speaker 4Oh, he died.
Speaker 1He died. Yeah the bearded dragon got him. So I called and they said the cricket killed the bearded dragon no.
Speaker 2So I called and they said the cricket killed the bearded dragon, no way.
Speaker 1Yes, it chewed his leg off Totally serious, and I called the guy and said were you kidding about it? He said no, there's something about these crickets in the yard man.
Speaker 4Only special crickets.
Speaker 1I don't know. They eat special crickets.
Speaker 2Them outside. Crickets are vicious.
Speaker 1They'll kick your butt.
Speaker 2Yeah, they will. I doubt my yeah, they will Watch out my gosh.
Speaker 1I miss true story too.
Speaker 2Well, I got another one 49% of women hate it when their man drinks directly from the container. Yeah, but they secretly do it themselves when no one is watching.
Speaker 1So the women don't like the men to do it, but they're doing it themselves and nobody's watching. So what about you? Ms Holly, Are you going to call me out? Yes, I am Go ahead.
Speaker 2So Barry, okay, barry came and watched a football game with me and he made me a Rotel dip. It was really good and we hung out and I had a jug of tea. I'm so used to being by myself that I drink straight from the jug. It's just me by myself.
Speaker 1I drink straight from the jug Went up to get a refill. I get it. Yeah, drink straight from the jug Went up to get a refill, I get it, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2And so Barry's like hey, you got anything to drink.
Speaker 1And you're sitting there guzzling moonshining a jug of tea.
Speaker 4Just passed him the jug You're like.
Speaker 1Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies, you get that jug turned up, I said oh, you said, I've got some.
Speaker 2I said no, I is tap.
Speaker 1He said perfect, perfect yes, give me some ice cubes and I'll go sit down. You just enjoy your tea.
Speaker 2I do. I drink straight from the tea jug.
Speaker 1What about you, Rachel? Are you a container drinker?
Speaker 4No, not really I mean because, like the kids in the house, we all share the containers.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 4I don't really. I know I'm not going to lie. I I have before.
Speaker 2Yeah, I will be honest, I have before, but not on a regular basis. Do you do it with like, what Like milk?
Speaker 1Mostly milk when the kids are little. When I was pouring Reagan some chocolate milk, I'd have to have a swig of it.
Speaker 2I wonder, why is it we chug? It's usually milk that people drink from the containers.
Speaker 1That's what I'm yeah.
Speaker 2I don't know.
Speaker 1There's something drinker.
Speaker 2I'm the Milo's tea drinker. Yes, I'm the jug drinker.
Speaker 1All right, thanks, rachel. It's 7.57.
Speaker 3Mornings with Barry and Holly here on Alabama's country giant WQSB.
Speaker 1It's Parmalee and Gonna Love you. It's 8.08 with Barry and Holly. Sunshine today 86. Rain. Maybe Thursday and Friday is something to keep an eye on. There could be some tropical rain coming this way off of the disturbance in the the gulf, which we'll know more about that later this week, but not today though, and, holly, I knew this was going to be something that interests you for sure. This interview this morning because you listen to a lot of podcasts.
Speaker 2Yes, you watch a lot of tv concerning things like this yeah, I'm obsessed with true crime and everything related to true crime, and when I saw sand mountain in the the title, I was like, oh, hold on a minute.
Speaker 1Wait, what have we got here? So we have the author Lisa Karnshall joining us this morning. Good morning Lisa. How are you?
Speaker 6Hi, I'm great Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1Oh, thanks for joining us. Now you have a book. Is it out yet, or is it about to be released, or what's?
Speaker 6the released. The release date is October 1st. It's being published by the University of Georgia Press, which I know may make some Alabama folks. But yeah, the University of Georgia Press is releasing it on October the 1st. That's the official date. But if people pre-order sometimes it arrives a little bit early.
Sand Mountain Shooting True Crime Book
Speaker 1It's called Midnight Cry, a shooting on Sand Mountain. Now, are you originally from this area? I'm from Horton. From Horton, oh, okay.
Speaker 6Yeah, I'm about as from here as you can get. Yes, I grew up close to Bethany Baptist Church in Horton on a poultry farm, chicken farm out there. A lot of my family's still out there, a lot of Carnes' In fact there's a Carnes Road out there.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 6And so yeah, I'm definitely local Went to Albertville High School, Went to Douglas Elementary and then continued my education in Albertville and then went on and graduated from the University of Alabama and then went to grad school at the University of Georgia.
Speaker 1Well, let's talk about the book Now. Tell us what is the book. It's based on a true story.
Speaker 6Yes, very much. So, yeah, well, it's a story I grew up hearing. In fact, for a long time I thought it was folklore, because you know, when you're a little kid and they're like, once upon a time, this 16-year-old kid had to do this thing. And then, the older I got, I realized that it was an actual event, that had happened, and I also realized, um, I was hearing one sort of perspective on it and I and I've always been a curious soul, and so I carried that story and I say that in the introduction, I carried that story around with me because I thought it was just fascinating, um, on so many levels. You know it's about family and community and you know loyalty and just, you know um trauma. You know the way that one event can tear a community apart, um, or bring other parts of it together.
Speaker 6You know the history of this area was sort of built into a lot of my you know my work too, so, so, yeah, that's that's what inspired me to, to get going on it, to work on it. So, and the older, like I said, I was telling her before we got started, during the COVID you know all the restrictions on COVID I thought, you know, this is time. It's my time. I need to write this book. Finally. I need to write it down. So I don't think of myself really as the author of this book. I'm just the person who wrote the words down from all of the other elements that already were out there.
Speaker 1Well, tell us about the event that happened, that inspired this book. It happened in this area, sure.
Speaker 6Yeah, just a few miles from here. Sure, yeah, just a few miles from here. So on the night of May 17th 1951, a group of officers went out to the home of Aubrey Kilpatrick and gunfire was exchanged and Aubrey Kilpatrick was killed no-transcript. Chief Deputy Washington Bennett Sorry James Lang, also a Marshall County Sheriff's Deputy, and Leonard Floyd, who was the police chief Boaz at the time. And James Lang survived and ended up being a witness in the subsequent trials. But, and you know it really, like I said, marshall County is not a huge county, it's the third smallest county in the state. But the event divided it's almost like you had the mountain people who sympathize more with the Kilpatricks, who were like, hey, if somebody shows up at your house in an unmarked car close to midnight, you know, oh, that a good point.
Speaker 6Yeah, and then. But then the folks down in the mountain. You know the people who were more you know who knew Zeke Boyles and Washington Bennett and James Lane, people you know down the mountain in Guntersville and Brindley and those areas they were more like, yeah, you know people who how should I put it? Sell alcohol, untaxed Moonsunners. They're doing illegal things. I guess it would be sort of like we would think in the modern parlance of like a drug dealer or meth dealer or something like that.
Speaker 2Is that why the police were called out to the home? Was it because of the selling of the?
Speaker 6alcohol? No, and that's really a complicated issue. Oh wow, you have to read in the book. No, actually what had happened was Aubrey Kilpatrick had gotten into an altercation with some of his tenant farmers oh yeah, they had. Apparently the work wasn't getting done that was supposed to get done, and Aubrey got angry and went out, confronted him and and the family's son was younger and a bit of a hothead, and so aubrey ended up pistol whipping one kid and shooting between the legs, like on the ground of another and they ended up um going and swearing out a warrant, so it was not for bootlegging it was for an assault charge, wow.
Speaker 6And there was a lot of. I talked to different people and they'll say well, I heard this and I heard that and I heard that Zeke Bowles had it out for Aubrey Kilpatrick and I try to incorporate a lot of what people say into the book for the most part but I really try to stick to the testimony and the trials I have. You know, james' son, Marty Kilpatrick, marty and Rhonda have been absolutely spectacularly wonderful and so supportive through this whole project and I hope I've done them proud right by this book, um so, but anyway.
Speaker 6But they were able to supply me with a dvd, which was of james and billy kilpatrick, um, who were 16 and 15 respectively when the event happened, and they're uh, it's basically just a video of them talking about the night of the shooting and James' subsequent time in prison, so that was a valuable resource.
Speaker 2Well, I'm super interested. I want to read this book. How can I?
Speaker 6find it. You can preorder on Amazon or Barnes, noble or directly through the University of Georgia Press, or you can attend the reading and signing on October the 5th. The Boaz Legacy Museum has been kind enough to help me launch my book tour, so I will be at the Boaz Legacy Museum on Saturday, october the 5th, from 11 am until pretty much they close the doors or run me off or one of the two.
Speaker 6But yeah, and that's another way that folks can come and get the books and I'll be reading a few passages, mainly the passages that concern Boaz specifically because it's the. Boaz Legacy Museum.
Speaker 2Wow, that's so neat.
Speaker 1So I'm sure everybody's interest is peaking now. So you now need to go get the book, don't you? Whenever the book comes out?
Speaker 6I hope so, and I hope they'll show up to the museum on the 5th, and let me sign a copy and talk to them Is there a chance down the road.
Speaker 1Who knows, we could see this as a movie one day. What do you think? Wouldn't that be good?
Speaker 6Well, you can definitely dream, and I can definitely see Matthew McConaughey playing Aubrey Kilpatrick.
Speaker 1Yes, you can give them all kinds of tips on the set. Well, Lisa, it's a pleasure meeting you. Thank you for sharing something that happened in this area and giving people information because it's new to me. It's something I'll need to read and learn about. I really wasn't familiar with this when I was growing up, but now I am.
Speaker 2Tyler Mays already texted me questions for you. He's one of our Go ahead and no, I can't.
Speaker 1Oh, gotcha Off the air, off the air but he's already. Post-air conversation right, yes, he's already His interest is piqued.
Speaker 2He was a police officer for Albertville and so he wants to know some of the lowdown on this. So we definitely got some interest piqued. And the name of the book is Midnight Cry.
Speaker 6Yes, cry is shooting on Sand Mountain. And Midnight Cry is actually the title of a gospel song. It's one of my it's like my sister Lynn Thrash's favorite gospel song and it talks about if the Midnight Cry will all go home. And since Zeke Boyles and his group of officers arrived close to midnight Sure, and during the testimony, james Kilpatrick, when he got on the stand to testify, one of the attorneys said you know what time was it? And he said it was close to midnight. And he said what do you remember? He goes the main thing I remember is my mother crying, and so I thought it just clicked in my head. But of course I didn't get permission rights to use the title from the people who wrote the song. But that's okay, it's just part of it.
Speaker 2So I know this will be my last question, but I know that there's a true crime element to this and there's a judicial side to this. What would you say is heavier? Is it more on the true crime side or is it more on the judicial?
Speaker 6Well, if I can add another angle to it, it's more anthropological in a way. I'm kind of looking at the way, a time and a place and everything. I mean you could look at immigration patterns from this 18th century and see why certain people came and lived in certain parts of the state, why they came to live there, how that shaped things, like even the liquor law I I mean there's some cultural differences in position here. Guntersville, when they got the local option in 1984, went wet immediately. Boaz didn't go wet until what? 2015?.
Speaker 1Yeah. Took a while, you're right.
Speaker 6I mean so those are some cultural differences just between the people who live on the mountain and people down in the river, and that's sort of one of those timeless human elements.
Speaker 6It's just between the people who live on the mountain and people down in the river, and that's sort of one of those timeless human elements. And so I guess it's kind of my love letter to home, because I'm writing about the place that made me, but then I look at how the place made other people, going back in the past too, and their behaviors and their beliefs, their stubborn resistance to and that kind of thing. So, yeah, I think that was, I think that was the main angle. The true crime just hadn't kind of happened to be. Yeah, because nothing, nothing sort of shocks the community more than you know, the killing of citizens and law enforcement, I mean that really galvanizes a lot of public, for sure.
Speaker 6And and also I think it resonated too with me because during that time, you know, we were experiencing um sort of a wave, the george floyd yeah exactly, and even though all of, obviously all of the principal actors in this book are white, um, I couldn't help but think about sort of the varying degrees of to what are the, the limits or the allowances that law enforcement has? Um, so and it it's not um, you know the out, while james kilpatrick is kind of the focus of the book, it it's not one clear side. You know, I'm not just telling james kilpatrick's story. That's already been done very well by another writer, another Dana Hill, local writer, very nice book. But I guess I wanted to see this dynamic between people who are benevolently living outside the law, because everybody knew what Aububrey kilpatrick was doing. But then you have this other contingent which I guess for reasons of, I don't know, ego or, or you know, or, desire to preserve the law to say, hey, we're, we're not going to allow this to happen in our county.
Speaker 6And what broke my heart was that this 16 year old boy got sucked into sure the affairs, and I realized 16 was adultish. During this time period, you know, 16 year olds could forge their parents signature and go off to war. So, um, but still, I think that was a focal point for me too was to look at how this kid sort of got pulled into this years-long sort of saga.
Speaker 1Right. Well, the book is called Midnight Cry, shooting on Sand Mountain. Lisa Karnshaw looking forward to reading it. Thank you very much for joining us.
Speaker 6And thank you so much for having me. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1You're welcome. All right, it's 822.

Speaker 1WQSB. The sun shines today up to 86. Getting a little closer back to normal. This kind of weather A little more humid today, a little hotter, but tonight 61, the low again. Tonight's going to be a nice night to be outside, Coming up later on. A lot of crime stories that was interesting. A lot of phone calls about the book coming out Midnight Cry. Yeah, you know, this is the first I'd heard of it. Yeah, it's crazy, though I've lived in this area my whole life, but I've never really heard the story.
Speaker 2so I know she grabbed me outside and was like do you want to hear the nitty-gritty details?
Speaker 1Yeah.
Unusual Truck Accident and Frito Feet
Speaker 2Talk to me before you leave and I said okay, that sounds interesting Uh-huh.
Speaker 1But here's one totally different, different. Check out and see how did this happen in Virginia. I'm looking at the picture on our Facebook page. Picture a tractor trailer. The back part of the 18-wheeler come loose and somehow it's hit a sign. That's you know, those above the interstate, those interstate signs it hit those signs?
Speaker 1Oh my gosh. Not one of the signs on the side of the road, it's on the ground. This one, and they're still investigating, saying how did this happen? And it shut down traffic for like what? Eight hours. In Virginia, one ex-user put on there saying I've always wanted to do this in video games. The sign is up against the tractor trailer is up against the signs in the air, those things are. What about 20 feet or so above and the tractor-trailer come loose and somehow ended up against the signs in midair?
Speaker 2Look at the traffic that is blocking. How long do you think that took?
Speaker 1to get through. It's over eight hours.
Speaker 2Oh my gosh, I didn't expect that long To get this fixed. Wow, well, all of my Bluey fans out there. Please somebody get this Like. Please somebody get this reference. Nice parking spot.
Speaker 1Rita. I'm guessing Rita can't drive, no, but how could this happen? I can see it coming loose from the cab, but then it somehow, I guess, bounced, I don't know how, and it's resting against the sign in the air that's dangerous, like how do you get that down?
Speaker 2how do you go about getting that down?
Speaker 1I guess that's why it took them eight hours I guess so yeah, if you want to see the picture, check out her facebook page.
Speaker 1It's 8 33 wqsb mornings with barry and holly this is hoax bluff eagles, this week's wqsp team of the Week. Also Catherine Sims of Guntersville High School. So we'll have more winners coming up, coming up. On Thursday we'll be announcing our next Student Athletes of the Week here on WQSP Morning's animal story. Do you say you already knew this? I did. This is new to me. I did not know this. I have been around mostly cats. We had dogs when I was younger, but I haven't been around a dog much. I've had a chance to see your dog, doug.
Speaker 2He's beautiful. See, I'm the biggest dog person you are. I love the dogs. When I go out in the public. There's two things I look for Babies and dogs, dogs, yep.
Speaker 1Let me ask you this question. The story says why do dogs paws smell like Fritos?
Speaker 5Oh, yeah, frito corn chips.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, Doug is guilty.
Speaker 1I didn't know this.
Speaker 2Yeah, so Like you opened up a fresh bag, really yeah, you've never noticed.
Speaker 1I've never been around dogs that much, especially not smelling their feet.
Speaker 2Oh my gosh. So when I'm laying down on the couch, doug comes and rests on my chest and I'll smell his little feet. I love the way it smells, that's like a guilty pleasure.
Speaker 1Okay, I can't help it. They say that some not all some dogs do have their paws that smell like corn chips. And somebody asked a question on Facebook what causes the smell? And there's a doctor, the chief veterinary officer at the American Kennel Club. He says the cause comes down to a shift towards higher levels of certain types of skin bacteria. I didn't know this.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Do you know the rest of the story?
Speaker 2Yes, I knew all of it. Yeah, well, go ahead and tell them tell them okay, well just like in humans, our feet tend to smell yeah, when we get sweaty or, I guess, grungy or dirty, they can have a smell and when the skin's flora changes, which is just like the skin's natural bacteria. That's when feet can tread into smellier territory. Ultimately, frito feet become two types of bacteria. Yeah, and both of them give off an odor that is close to corn chips.
Speaker 1I have no idea.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1No idea.
Speaker 2Yes, and the fix is easy. You just get some like mild blue dawn like dish soap and dilute it down with water and wash their feet.
Speaker 1That is amazing, but I can't help it.
Speaker 2I love the way it smells. I do, I like it. I like it.
Speaker 1You were talking, you said you know how this happens, no idea.
Speaker 6This is all brand new to me but that is amazing yeah.
Speaker 2I like it. Every dog that I've ever had, like family dog, they've always smelled like corn chips. I've had a Yorkie, a weenie dog okay, doug is a rescue mutt, but gotcha, you know, they just all because they can't sweat I've been around some kids that they're.
Speaker 1They get a little when they get older. Not, not babies. Babies don't ever smell bad. But as they begin getting older, like seven, eight, nine, ten some of the body odor does smell like corn chips. Really they have. It's like the armpits have a corn chip smell. Oh, so it makes sense now that they're saying that's some kind of fungus. Yes, bacteria, it's just a matter of washing.
Speaker 2Yeah, just wash and keep them clean.
Speaker 1Okay, now we know, and before we go, the morning's words of wisdom quote of the day. We think Monday, you know, tough day, maybe give you something a little funny.
Speaker 2I'm a big fan of actual Bill Murray and this is a Bill Murray quote. Yeah, he says whatever you do, always give 100%. Unless you're giving blood, then you don't give 100%.
Speaker 1No, better not. Yeah, that's good. All right, it's 8.56.
